Former Africa 5,000m silver medallist Vincent Yator struggled to hold back tears on his hospital bed as he narrated to PD Wikendi how lucky he is to be alive after Monday night’s grisly road accident along the Nairobi, Nakuru Highway at Kikopey that involved a North Rift Shuttle.
Yator who is recovering at the Reale Group Hospital in Eldoret where he was transferred to for specialised treatment, said it was by the grace of God that he came out of the wreckage alive. His friend and fellow athlete Francis Kiplagat was not as lucky as he was among the passengers who died on the spot.
“I must say it’s a miracle, I cannot believe that I’m alive. I came out of the wreckage by myself amid the sounds of people screaming and crying, though I don’t know what caused the accident,” said Yator in the company of his brother Boaz Kiprotich.
The Iten-based runner had travelled to Nairobi to apply for a visa as he intended to compete at the Paris Half Marathon in France.
