Reclamation of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) lead is Mathare United’s to lose yet again as they take on Ulinzi Stars in the weekend’s highlight at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru Saturday.
After Gor Mahia dispatched Zoo Kericho 4-2 in a mid-week fixture at the Kericho Green Stadium on Thursday, K’Ogalo and Mathare United are joint leaders with both teams having a maximum six points from two outings.
But the statistics might change in favour of Mathare United who will savor a chance to take the leadership alone should they overcome Ulinzi. Gor will not be in any of the KPL weekend action Saturday as they are preparing for their return Africa Champions League return match t Vegeteranios of Equatorial Guinea in Malabo.
Boasting of back to back win over new freebies Vihiga United and relatively experienced Nzoia Sugar, Mathare are expected to lean on Harambee Stars trialist Chrispin Oduor and his strike partner Francis Omondi to conjure up the desired results to help them take the league command.
In the meantime, Wazito who are some of the most impressive new teams in the league will be hoping to continue with their giant-killing antics, this time against Kakamega Homeboyz at Camp Toyoyo ground in Jericho.
Suffice it to say, Wazito’s shock 1-0 win over Sony Sugar last week is enough to send jitters in Kakamega Homeboyz whose coach Mike Mururi has declared that they will be taking a cautious approach.
“I haven’t watched them (Wazito) in action but I believe they are a strong team if they could tame Sony,” said Mururi. The tactician said he was not happy with his team conceding a soft goal against Sofapaka in the dying minutes a week ago and has demanded an improved performance from his charges.
“We gave Sofapaka an easy goal and I have cautioned my defenders against laxity. We have to play till the final whistle because really, that was a gift goal. Whether it is one minute or two added in a match I have insisted on top level concentration and they are taking in the instructions well,’’ Mururi said.
At Sudi Stadium in Bungoma, win-less Nzoia Sugar will be aiming for the scalp of Nakumatt. Nzoia coach Bernard Mwalala has a talented squad but the team has yet to gel and this was evident when they went down 2-1 to Mathare United.
