Senators demand funds as they resume sittings

Senators have renewed their quest to be allocated funds saying they risk becoming irrelevant if they are not given resources for development. Speaking after resuming sittings for the Second Session, the senators said they need money to enable them effectively play their oversight role.

Led by Leader of Majority Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), the senators said they will not accept to act as “flower girls” yet they were elected just like other leaders who get funding.

“We get a lot of criticism that we do little yet we do not get funding to deliver on our mandate,” said Murkomen. Deputy Leader of Majority Fatuma Dhullo (Isiolo) said senators risked becoming irrelevant.

“We are just flower girls and we will become irrelevant if something is not done about it,” he said. Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni) put the Parliamentary Service Commission to task over funds allocation saying the commission had demonstrated apathy towards the House.
