Lawyer Harun Ndubi was yesterday charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to comply with police instructions and causing an obstruction on Jakaya Kikwete Road, Nairobi.
The human rights lawyer who appeared before Milimani resident magistrate Elector Riany pleaded not guilty to the charges. The charges against Ndubi state that on February 11 at about 8.30pm on Jakaya Kikwete road in Nairobi county, the lawyer being the driver of a motor vehicle registration number KCF 820B make Toyota Harrier caused obstruction, hence causing inconvenience to other road users.
He was also accused of refusing to blow into the breathalyzer for an alcohol test upon being instructed to do so by a police officer in uniform. The activist lawyer is said to have been arrested near Gate D of State House on Sunday night while on his way home.
Ndubi, through his lawyer John Khaminwa, asked the court to release him on personal bond, saying he is an officer of the court and a respected man who cannot abscond.
He told the court that police did not conduct thorough investigation on the alleged offences against him before he was arraigned in court. He was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000 pending the hearing of the case on February 23.
