Ghanaian forward Stephen Owusu scored on his debut helping his new club Nairobi Stima overcome City Stars 2-0 yesterday at Camp Toyoyo as the National Super League resumed. The burly attacker formerly with Kenya Premier League bigwigs Tusker FC was at the end of a free kick from winger John Kang’ethe with a simple tap in finish in the 37th minute.
The start was punchy as both teams sought to settle in the match which was punctuated with exemplary tactics. Jimmy Bageya was a handful for City Stars as he constantly found spaces at the back of Stima defence but the final balls went begging. John Kamau and Simon Ogutu also came close for the Kawangware side in the early exchanges but were thwarted.
Attacking midfielder Vincent Odongo was the creative force for Nairobi Stima engineering good moves from the heart of the pack. City Stars poured forward through substitutes Francis Owiyo and Abdurahim Mango after the break but Stima held their own led by lanky defender Joseph Shikokoti.
In the 57th minute totally against the run of play, Alex Luganji pounced on a loose ball from the midfield and beat several players on a solo run before unleashing a sizzler past City Stars custodian Ronny Kawinzi.
After the final whistle, Stima tactician Ibrahim Shikanda praised his charges for playing to book.”Winning the first active match is usually difficult but we came through. I liked our tactical discipline on the overall.”
Meanwhile, KCB earned an easy walkover after their opponents Muhoroni Youth failed to turn up for their match at the same venue.Western Stima yesterday began their pursuit of returning back to the top league on inspiring note following their 2-0 win over Modern Coast at Moi Stadium in Kisumu. Stima made it clear to their opponents of their intention to win the match with Johana Mwita’s goal just at the start of second half.
Forward Austine Ochieng missed a chance to stretch his side’s lead when his attempt from outside the box went wide. In bid to boost his attacking force, Mukabi sought the service of fresh legs of the Liberian international Maurice Dunkley and Erastus Mwaniki for Austine Ochieng and Herbert Kopany respectively.
Substitute Mwaniki gave Stima their second goal in the 76th minute with a rebounder after Modern Coast shot stopper Ryan Hamisi had punched into the pitch the ball.
