Senate Committee on Information and Technology has summoned Information, Communication and Technology Cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru (pictured) over the closure of four local television channels 10 days ago.
The Gideon Moi-led committee now wants Mucheru to explain why the channels remained off-air even after a High Court order directing that they resume transmissions pending investigations into their role in last month’s oath-taking of Opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Committee made the summons as the government finally switched on Citizen and Inooro television stations owned by Royal Media Service after 10 days off air. The stations’ transmission was restored at around 4.05 pm yesterday.
KTN News and NTV were also switched off ahead of the ceremony on January 30. The two were switched on after activist Okiya Omtatah filed contempt proceedings against Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, Mucheru, and the Communications Authority board for failure to reopen the TV stations.
