Experience and emerging talents litter team expected in Nairobi

Fresh from winning Discovery Cross Country championships Josephat Kipchirchir will lead Central Rift region during national cross country championships-cum-national trials for the Fifth edition of Africa Cross Country championships set for Algeria.

Emmaculate Jebet will compete in the 10km senior women’s category while Roselinda Jepketer and Rhonex Kipruto will be in junior races. Kipchirchir, from Nandi County will be joined by Baringo’s road running specialist Alfred Barkach, Uasin Gishu’s Nicholas Kiptum, Emmanuel Bor (Nandi), Julius Kogo (Nandi) and former World Youth champion Richard Kimunyan from Baringo.

Nandi’s Emmaculate Jebet will be on the starting list for 10km women’s race. Jebet will joined by Maurine Jepkemoi (Nandi), Hellen Jepkurgat (Nandi), Rebecca Jepchirchir (Baringo), Gloria Kite (Uasin Gishu) and Alice Koech of Baringo.

World Under- 18 800m silver medalist Lydia Jeruto will lead the 6km junior women from Baringo together with Discovery 2018 champion Roselinda Jepketer (Nandi), Agnes Jebet Ng’etich (Uasin Gishu), Monica Chirchir (Baringo), Nesphine Jepleting (Nandi) and Nancy Jesang of Nandi.

The Discovery champion and former secondary schools queen Rhonex Kipruto (Baringo) will be joined by Kennedy Kimutai (Uasin Gishu), Richard Kimunyan (Baringo) Evans Keitany (Uasin Gishu), Lameck Kimutai (Nandi) and Justus Soget of Baringo.

Meanwhile, Edward Zakayo who won silver in 3,000m at the World Under- 18 championships in Kasarani last year, will lead North rift region. Zakayo won the North Rift 8km junior men’s race, Running for Elgeyo Marakwet County beat a host of other athletes to book for a slot at the national championships where the federation will select a team to represent Kenya at the continental championships.

Zakayo wants to feature in team Kenya and also to bring gold to Kenya, which he lost to Ethiopian during World under-18 championships in Nairobi will represnt the region with a promising time of 25:43.45. Noel Rotich from West Pokot and Reuben Longosiwa will join him.

In women’s 6km junior category, Irene Chepchirchir from West Pokot will be joined by Elgeyo Marakwet Winnie Kimutai and Domitila Cheruto from West Pokot. Moses Kibet from Trans Nzoia will fly regions flag in 10km senior men, will be joined by Isaac Yego of Elgeyo Marakwet and Justus Kimutai of West Pokot.
