More than 200 street families were moved from the Nairobi central business district in an operation carried out on Tuesday night by the County government.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said the individuals will receive treatment for their drug addictions in the rehabilitation centres. “The initiative to rehabilitate those living on the streets will be continuous under my administration,” he said.
This comes at a time when there is a public outcry on the increased number of street families which has been blamed for the insecurity within the city centre and outskirts. He said they will train the older members of street families on life skills and enrol the young ones in schools.
Sonko added that additional installation of CCTV camera and ongoing massive street lighting programme will assist in the fight against crime. “In line with my campaign manifesto, my administration has started the rehabilitation of street families in order to secure their future,” said the governor.
