Kirinyaga county bans private vehicles turned PSVs

Private vehicles ferrying passengers without complying with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations have been banned in Kirinyaga county.

Area Deputy governor Peter Ndambiri said no vehicle will be allowed on the road without complying with NTSA rules and regulations.

Speaking while closing a two-day Kukena Sacco drivers’ sensitisation seminar at Kerugoya town, Ndambiri said the County government had withdrawn all licences issued to the private vehicles to carry passengers.

He said the private vehicles, which have been converted into PSVs, have not complied with traffic rules and endanger lives of passengers.

The Deputy governor said the County government supports fair and genuine business and would not allow Probox vehicles among others to unfairly compete with legitimate matatu operators who compliy with government rules. “We have instructed the base commander to impound and prosecute the drivers and owners of these vehicles,” he said.

Ndambiri also lamented that boda boda operators are flouting traffic rules with impunity, urging the police to take action to avert accidents.

Kerugoya traffic boss said a crackdown has commenced and more than 30 non-PSV vehicles, which were carrying passengers, have been impounded and their drivers arraigned in court.
