Senate committee warns counties on funds use

A powerful senate committee has threatened not to approve budgetary allocations to county governments should they fail to account for resources allocated to them.

The Senate Finance and Budget committee also told governors to ensure they use money allocated to them on projects that have been approved. Committee members were speaking after its elections where Mohamud Mohamed (Mandera) was elected chairman while Isaac Mwaura (Nominated) clinched the vice chairperson’s position.

Mwaura warned that senators would not hesitate to withhold money from counties if previous allocations are not properly utilised. “We will not behave like a mortician.

We will look at how heavy the budget is and then agree on reviews and if we see any problem we will not fail to decline to approve the release of money,” he said. Mohamed said the committee will ensure counties get allocations as required by the law.

Nominated senator Rose Nyamunga expressed concerns that corruption in the national government had been devolved to counties, thus denying Kenyans development. She said: “We must be vigilant so that our people get value for money. On issues of budget, the county governments need to be open on how they spend their money.”
