Police in Laikipia recovered 659 out of 719 head of cattle that were stolen at Ole Naishu Ranch on Tuesday morning. Heavily armed cattle rustlers raided the ranch and seriously injured two herders before making away with the animals.
Laikipia East OCPD James Kithuka said the animals were recovered at Mukogodo forest, 20 kilometres away, after a fierce exchange of fire with 30 armed raiders.
The rustlers reportedly shot at the herders’ houses in the ranch, leaving Stanley Kibaya with stomach wounds while his colleague William Kimeri lost a middle finger after being hit by a bullet.
“The cows were in their sheds and after the shoot-out the raiders drove all the cattle towards Mukogodo Forest,” Domisiano Koiyangi, a herder, said.
He said they alerted the ranch managers who then called the police. Swift response by the police ensured the rustlers were tracked on time. Kithuka said the animals scattered when they fled after being overpowered by the bandits, adding that the search is still ongoing.
