Liberia’s President George Weah to grace CAF gala in Ghana

Accra, Wednesday @PeopleSports11

Ghana will be the first country George Weah will visit since his election as the President of Liberia as he will travel to Accra to attend the CAF Awards 2017 which takes place in Accra on Thursday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Borussia Dortmund and Gabon goes up against Liverpool’s Senegalese Sadio Mane and Egyptian Mohamed Salah with none of the final three candidates having a defining achievement over the last 12 months to set them apart.

The trio of Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria), Chrestina Kgatlana (South Africa) and Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene (Cameroon) will battle it out for the Women’s Player of the Year. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says it is a matter of “respect” to allow Salah and Mane to go to an awards night in Ghana 24 hours before the FA Cup game against Everton. “We sleep in a hotel, they sleep in a plane.

That is all the difference. We have to show them respect,” said Klopp. The awards recognise the best male and female players from the continent and organisers expect that all previous winners since their inception in 1992 will be present.

Salah, who scored the goal that took Egypt to their first World Cup since 1990 as well as 23 in 29 appearances for Liverpool this season, is the favourite having also won the BBC African Football of the Year award in December.

Weah, meanwhile, was expected to arrive at the Kotoka International Airport by midday on Wednesday to attend Thursday’s event to honour top African footballers for their performances for last year.

Several football legends will be attending Thursday’s event at the Accra International Conference Centre but Weah was long invited by CAF to receive an award as an outstanding legend and an ambassador for the game.

Mr Weah, who was raised in a slum in Liberia’s capital Monrovia, starred at top-flight European football clubs Paris St-Germain (PSG) and AC Milan, before ending his career in England with brief stays at Chelsea and Manchester City. He is the only African footballer to have won both Fifa World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon D’Or. – AGENCIES
