Kenya’s celebrated athlete Paul Kipsiele Koech is among the nominees for the Community Hero’s gong in the 2017 Sportsman Of Year (SOYA) award.
Also in the nomination list is current Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Nairobi Branch official Dickson Doyo, a former footballer at Country Bus FC and the pioneer of Uprising Group where youths in Majengo Slums have used football to change their lives and end up engaging in entrepreneurship.
Other nominees are former Harambee Starlets goalkeeper Rosemary Kadondi and former Harambee Stars skipper Musa Otieno. The SOYA panelists paid homage to Koech for winning the Diamond League trophy back-to-back in 2010, 2011 and 2012 in the 3,000 metres steeplechase.
Koech’s philanthropic work was also recognised having helped to build four classrooms at Kapchekoro Primary School besides sponsoring several needy cases both in learning institutions and athletics in his home area.
Some of those who have benefited from the venture are Japheth Kipkoech who has graduated from University of Lowa in USA and Eric Lagat who is almost through with his medical course at Kenya Medical Training Institute (KMTC) in Kisumu.
