Ex-footballer George Weah becomes Liberia’s new president

Former football star and Liberian senator George Weah has won Liberia’s presidential election, defeating the vice-president of 12 years, Joseph Boakai, in a runoff with over 60% of the vote.

The liberian Senator was today appointed head of state by the country’s electoral commission chair Jerome Korkoyah.

This is the country’s first democratic transition since 1944 and follows two devastating civil wars.
