Kapsoit were crowned the champions of Stony December Football tournament for teams from Kapsoit Ward in Kericho County after beating Ketitui 2-0 in the finals.
The champions got their goals through Ronald Ng’eno and Erick Kirui who found the back of the net in the 37th and 47th minutes respectively in the finals staged at Kapsoit Secondary School playground at the weekend.
“We played very well but we were unlucky not to score,” said Ketitui player Gilbert Kipyegon, who alongside his Kapsoit counterpart Oscar Kipng’etich say lack of sponsorship is hampering them from developing their talent further. The duo say most youth at the grassroots were ready to engage in sports but are facing several challenges.
The players cited lack of finances, limited sports facilities and equipment as well as poor pitches as some of the problems facing the youth in the area while calling on the county government of Kericho to set aside some money to support sports in villages.
Kapsoit chairman Reuben Ng’etich said the tournament was aimed at nurturing talent among the youths as there is need to support local football teams in a bid to take the game to the next level.
“Many youth in the villages are willing to embrace sports but support is hard to come by. Lack of facilities and other requirements in sports are also major challenges,” said Ng’etich during the tournament that attracted 10 teams from Kericho.
