Some political leaders from Nyeri county led by Dr Thuo Mathenge, who unsuccessfully sought the governor seat, are calling for special prayers led by elders to cleanse the county from what they believe is a jinx, after the death of three county leaders within a year.
Speaking in Nyeri, Thuo (pictured below), said the only way to stop deaths of leaders in the county is by conducting a special prayer under a sacred mugumo tree.
“I want to urge elders in the county to come out and pray the traditional way to cleanse our county of these deaths we are witnessing,’’ he said. So far, three leaders among them the county’s first governor Nderitu Gachagua, his successor Wahome Gakuru and Ruguru ward MCA Peter Weru, have died this year.
The county’s first governor Gachagua died in February while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. He was the country’s first governor to die in office.
Tragedy struck again last month when governor Wahome Gakuru died in a tragic road accident at Kabati on the Thika-Sagana highway. The recent death was that of Weru, who collapsed and died during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kiamariga in Mathira. He will be buried today at Ngorano.
