Traders in Kisumu are counting losses after county government officials demolished their shops and destroyed property worth millions of shillings. The demolition was carried out on Saturday morning in Dunga area where structures on the road reserve were brought down to pave way for Impala-Dunga road works.
The road is set for construction under Kisumu Urban Project funded by the French government. Winam book sellers and informal traders chairman Joanese Odera said they lost items worth about Sh6 million in the demolition carried out by county council officials.
Trade executive Nerry Achar said notices had been given to the people whose houses and shops were on the road reserve but failed to comply. He said they received complaints from those affected and assured them that their concerns will be addressed by today.
