Kamwangi police officers, Nyumba Kumi members and residents on Wednesday night thwarted a theft at Gatei village coffee factory. More than 15 men, who had invaded the factory at 11pm had already taken 31 sacks of coffee, when they were caught following a tip-off by the factory guards and locals.
Police recovered the stolen coffee while infuriated residents set ablaze two motorbikes believed to have been set to ferry the coffee to unknown locations.
The factory, located on the border of Gatundu North and South sub-counties, has survived three robbery attempts in the past three months. Gatundu North deputy county commissioner Amos Mariba lauded locals for volunteering information to tame the vice.
