Kericho County will soon host international sporting events following plans by county administration to upgrade the Kericho Green Stadium.
Governor Paul Chepkwony disclosed that beginning next March, the county will be home to international spectacular sporting events saying currently the county is about to identify a contractor to be awarded tender for giving facelift to the stadium.
Speaking during this year’s Jamhuri celebrations at the stadium on Tuesday, the county boss said the stadium will be fitted with artificial track and other facilities in a bid to meet the international standards.
“Let me say we have not started this as plan due to some challenges but we’re on course. Bids from contractors have been received and we are assessing them before awarding the tender. We are nearing conclusion in this and we expect to start the project before the end of January next year,” the governor added.
The governor revealed that Sh340 million has been set aside for the project adding that the county takes sports seriously since the sector is also a source of livelihoods for young people.
Governor Chepkwony said the county will soon host international athletics and other international sports saying this has been boosted by the ongoing construction of an airstrip at Kerenga in the outskirts of Kericho Town at a cost of Sh100 million.
“We will have sportsmen and women landing direct in the county and therefore, this is a great boost to sports in the county besides boosting the county’s economy because we will be having many foreigners visiting our county,” Chepkwony said.
