Ombek Red Devils from Homabay County and Plateau Queens from Kisumu County are the champions of the 2017 Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom Nyanza Region after winning the boy’s and girl’s finals respectively played at the Gusii Stadium in Kisii Sunday.
Plateau Queens were the first to make it the nationals after edging out Ugari 1-0 courtesy of Margaret Atieno’s 41st minute headed in goal from a well curved in corner from Beverline Achieng.
The girl’s final paved way for an entertaining boy’s match which the Red Devils came from a goal down to win it 2-1 at full time. Pre-match favourite Awendo Academy boasted by English Premier League side Hull City academy star Vincent Otieno started strongly and took an early lead through none other Hull City Academy trialist and Kakamega School youngster Vincent Otieno but lurking Red Devils clawed back to equalise through Wycliffe Ochieng.
Ombek shone in the second half, sitting back in defence and going dangerously on counter attackers and their strategy worked out magic as Rodgers Odhiambo scored a second and winning goal for Ombek, leaving coach Fredrick Eliazar delirious.
“I am overwhelmed. We faced a very tactical Awendo Academy side but I’m happy that our strategy of sitting back and hitting them on counter attacker paid off. I’m very excited to be Nyanza Region Champions,” said coach Fredrick Eliazar.
En-route to the finals, Plateau Queens from Nyando Kisumu County secured a final berth after thrashing Omobera from Nyamira County 4-1 with Mercy Akinyi grabbing a hat-trick and Faith Omunyako hitting the other goal for Queens while Ugari beat Ekenyoro 2-1.
