Beach festival kicks off, boosts tourism in Kwale

The Diani Beach Festival in Kwale county has kicked off with over 2,000 tourists from 37 countries expected to attend the event.

County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Youth, Sports and Gender Ramadhan Bungale said the county government is looking forward to making the festival a calendar event since it has a major role in tourism promotion and revival of the industry.

He said that most residents of Diani depend on tourism which has of late suffered severe instability due to the prolonged election period in the country.

“With this kind of an event taking place annually it will boost business for hoteliers, tour and safaris agents together with the beach operators,” Bungale told Journalists in Kwale.

He also said that all visitors coming into the area during this holiday season are assured of their safety since security has been beefed up in the entire county.

“We assure all our guests that Diani is very safe they should all come and enjoy their holidays at the best beach destination in Africa which has won World Travel Awards four times in a row,” he said.

Sandip Patel, the festival director said the event will run up to January 10, 2018, adding that sky diving has attracted 600 international participants.

“We have 600 participants for sky diving from UK, Germany, France, Holland, Denmark, South Africa, Egypt among other European countries while the rest are from East African countries,” he said.

Other events at the festival include music concerts, excursions, tours and safaris game drives, water sports, snorkeling and dolphin spots watch and mangroves forest board walk. “We have several activities that guests can decide on what they can do on a certain day,” he said.
