SportPesa Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz has landed a lucrative multi-million long term sponsorship deal from Kakamega County, becoming the third top-flight team to be sponsored by a County government after Zoo Kericho and Vihiga United.
Speaking to the media after watching a Group B match between Uganda Cranes and Burundi, which ended in a barren draw, Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya revealed that his government had been impressed by the performance of the team last season and would not hesitate to support them.
“As a County that values sports, we have been impressed by the team and I know with some support to the team, they are capable of performing much better. I also want to appeal to the team’s management to put right structures in place to enable make them attract more fans and other sponsors,” Oparanya said.
Though the governor and the team boss Toto Shimanyula declined to make public the sponsorship deal until December 12 when they make the official announcement, it is believed the figure could be in the range of Sh40 million annually.
