Some Wiper Party leaders have kicked off campaigns for Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential bid in 2022. They have hit the ground barely a fortnight after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto took oath of office after the Supreme Court upheld their win in the October 26 fresh presidential election.

To affirm that they have Kalonzo’s blessings, the Wiper leader addressed the crowd on phone from Germany, saying his dream for the country’s presidency is alive.

He called for support, prayers and goodwill. Kalonzo is in Germany, where his wife is recuperation from illness. Led by acting Wiper chairman Kivutha Kibwana, the leaders spoke on Sunday evening in Kathiani after visiting area MP Robert Mbui, who is recovering after being injured in a police confrontation with Opposition demonstrators in Nairobi last month.

Ben Momanyi (Borabu), Rashid Kassim (Wajir Township), Joshua Mwalyo (Masinga) and Jessica Mbalu (Kibwezi East) were among the legislators at the meeting. The leaders, who later addressed residents in Machakos county, said Kalonzo’s 2022 presidency bid is unstoppable, adding that they will ensure he becomes the country’s next president in line with the deal signed by Nasa co-principals Raila Odinga (ODM), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya).

Kibwana, who is also the Makueni Governor, said they are mobilising resources and voters across the country to take Kalonzo to State House. “Wiper is a national party because we managed to get seats from across the country,” he said.

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua said the party is doing ground work in preparation for the presidential battle with among others Deputy President William Ruto, who has set his eye on succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Our party leader will be a presidential candidate and this calls for dedication, commitment and sacrifice because it is not an easy task. Whatever happens on the way let us not lose our focus on the big prize because this is the only opportunity we have,” he said.

Momanyi urged the Kamba community to remain united to prevent outsiders from taking advantage of their political divisions. However, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has also declared his bid for presidency in 2022.
