Tension remained high at Kasarani area in Kapedo on the border of Baringo and Turkana counties after three police officers and a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) official were attacked and killed by suspected bandits.

One of the slain officers is a survivor of the 2014 attack when bandits killed 22 AP colleagues at the same spot. The Tuesday evening incident left four other officers and a civilian with serious injuries. Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo said the officers were ambushed on their way back to Lomelo in Turkana East after delivering foodstuff to officers at Kapedo camp.

He said some unknown number of armed bandits ambushed the officers at Kasarani, killing two officers on the spot while the other officer died while trying to find his way out of the bush. “During the attack, the truck driver sped off to Lomelo but the TSC officer who, was in the vehicle with him died before reaching the health centre after being shot at on the head,” Musiambo said.

The bandits took off with the officers’ firearms after killing them. The regional coordinator added that the bandits seemed to have been targeting police officers because there were no incidents of cattle rustling that had been witnessed in the area lately.

Musiambo said they will carry out a serious operation in Kasarani area to recover the stolen firearms as well as arrest the suspects involved in the killing of the police officers. “It will not be a joke, the community must produce those firearms and the suspects who killed our officers. This is the second incident police officers have been targeted in the same area,” said Musiambo.

He, however, disclosed that the government will not condone such heinous acts of killing officers in cold blood. The attack comes three years after 22 officers and three civilians were killed at the same spot by suspected bandits from Pokot community. It was alleged that the officers and the three employees of Toyota Kenya were heading to Kapedo when the bandits ambushed them .

They were all killed on the spot. Musiambo further disclosed that they have so far deployed two choppers to the area , one for evacuating the injured and the other for surveillance. The officers are awaiting to be air lifted to Nairobi for further treatment . The incident happened at an area hit by the on-going wave of insecurity for decades. End.
