With Gor Mahia having already put the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) to bed with an unassailable 73 points, the second position going into the last matches next weekend is up for grabs between Sofapaka, Posta Rangers and Tusker.
In the meantime, Mathare United, Zoo Kericho, Thika United and Western Stima are still embedded in the relegation dogfight and each of these teams trying to avoid losing their fixtures to avoid joining Muhoroni Youth who have already been banished in the top-tier action.
Sofapaka made a huge stride towards winding up runners-up to Gor after they dumped reigning champions Tusker 1-0 in Ruaraka at the weekend and in the process catapulted to the second position with a two-point advantage over their main challengers Rangers and Tusker.
Sofapaka’s final match is against Zoo Kericho in Narok next weekend and assuming they win and Tusker and Rangers lose or settle for draws in their respective assignments, Batoto Ba Mungu will be home and dry in their quest for the second slot.
And to an extent, fifth placed Kariobangi Sharks have a mathematical chance of achieving such a feat in the event that they record victory in the conclusion of the league and Sofapaka, Rangers and Tusker lose out. However, Sofapaka are bound to enjoy the bragging rights of producing the Golden Boot Award winner in Masoud Juma.
The left-footed Masoud cemented his position at the top of the leading marksmen after scoring a double in his team’s 4-1 hammering of Nzoia Sugar at the weekend to bring his tally to 17, five ahead of Nakumatt’s Kepha Aswani and Gor Mahia duo of Jacques Tuyisenge and Meddie Kagere.
Elsewhere, AFC Leopards moved to 10th position on the league table with a final round of matches remaining courtesy of a 1-0 win against Chemelil Sugar in the only fixture on Sunday in Kasarani.
Ingwe who are already safe from relegation will be vouching to be placed eighth to enable them feature in the Top 8 Tournament next year. The crunch relegation battle is getting more interesting by the day and just when pundits expected a team like Stima to make a mockery of their fight for survival, the power-men, who sit in the seventeenth position in the 18-team log, stunned Posta Rangers 1-0.
With 14th placed Mathare United seemingly having made an escape act, Zoo who are perched in the 15thb place alongside Thika United and Stima who are below them in the chart will be keeping their fingers crossed in the battle to evade the chop.
