A joint investigation team led by detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Traffic Department and the Transport ministry is probing the cause of the accident that claimed the life of Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru and left three of his handlers injured. According to police sources, the team will visit the scene of the accident to “reconstruct the scene” that could unravel the cause of the mysterious fatal crash.
Mercedes Benz dealers, DT Dobie will also be brought on board to give technical advice. The wreckage is at Makuyu Police Station. “A team of officers is leading the investigations drawn from CID, Traffic and the ministry. DT Dobie, who are the dealers of Mercedes Benz and Pirelli tyre manufacturers will give technical advice where required,” a senior officer said.
However, yesterday evening, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said he is yet to get a brief on the progress and status of the investigations. “I will check and let you know,” Boinnet said when asked when the investigations are expected to be complete. Central region police boss Gedion Amala said he cannot discuss such sensitive matters on phone.
Engineers from the Transport ministry and the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha ) are expected to give a comprehensive report on the status of the concrete pillars and rail guards on the section of the road.
Official police report shows the accident was caused by a tyre burst that caused the vehicle to skid and veer off the road. Investigators are keen to establish the speed at which the vehicle was moving before the crash and the roadworthiness of the vehicle. The scene of the accident is still condoned off as detectives seek to extract evidence backed by eyewitness accounts.
