Elani’s Maureen Kunga … comes to fashion

Elani’s Maureen Kunga has one rule when it comes to fashion — comfort as Grace Wachira discovers

As a celebrity, do you feel pressure to look a certain way?

Not particularly. It’s a job just like any other. So, there are days you need to dress up and days when it’s not that important. It is interesting to be someone that people look up to for style inspiration because I never thought of myself as someone stylish.

Does the celebrity status come with any perks such as fashion labels and designers chasing after you?

Sometimes, and it’s always an honour when they do. There are designers I love who I’ve had the pleasure of working with and designers that I am really looking forward to doing something in the near future. The fact that my job allows me to do that is really awesome.

What dictates your day-to-day look?

Comfort, I think. I don’t think too hard about what I’m wearing. If it’s cold, I’ll put on a sweater, if I’m supposed to be at a meeting, I will dress accordingly. However, I always go for comfort.

What’s the one clothing item you wear often?

My mum got me a pretty awesome pair of brown shoes that I wear almost all the time now. I love them.

As a curvaceous girl, what’s the one rule you stick to when dressing?

I think that dressing comfortably and wearing clothes that fit you well is a style rule that everyone requires, not just curvy girls.

Where do you shop?

Anywhere and everywhere.

What does style mean to you? Is it about looking or feeling good?

I think it’s a bit of both. When you look good, you feel good, and when you are comfortable and feel good you exude a confidence that makes you look good.

What are the essential must-haves in your closet?

A great pair of heels, a great pair of flats and a good pair of jeans. You have great style. How do you choose an outfit? It is really about comfort. I figured out dressing for the occasion, putting on what fits for where you’re going, but I love to be comfortable in my skin, and my dress choices cater for that.

Do you think fashion trends have evolved for the better to accommodate everyone?

Definitely! There are many more options available now for everybody, with every different style, different body type. It’s great.

Talk to us about hair. You’re always switching things up.

Well, I have natural hair, so it’s pretty easy to change things around and do new stuff because a lot of my hair care is done at home, so I can do a lot of stuff. I love having natural hair and I think my hair is much healthier and much stronger than it ever was.

Are you big on make-up off the stage?

I wear it when I need to. But I feel that for me, less is more.

If you were reincarnated as an outfit or fashion staple or shoes, what would you be and why?

Maybe a leather jacket. Then I want to be used everyday, and I’ll be treated really well, and I can add such a cool flair to any outfit (laughs).

Speaking of footwear, what’s your poison?

Comfortable wear, regardless of the style.
