Elite athletes are often thought of as warriors. They’re seemingly invincible, and some feel it, as they excel in their sports. But throughout history, many have been diagnosed with diseases during their careers and rose above them to continue playing as compiled by Lynette Matheka.
1. Joe Thompson (Cancer)
Thompson who plays for English League One side Rochdale has battled cancer twice in four years and still keeps playing. The midfielder was first diagnosed with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 while playing for Tranmere Rovers FC, but recovered a year later. The cancer reoccurred last December but he played for four months until March when he reached breaking point. He was given the green light in September to play again.
