Defending champion Stig Blomqvist will be first off the ramp at Sarova Whitesands in this year’s Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally scheduled for November 23 to December 1 covering a total distance of 4,000km between Kenya and Tanzania.
The Swedish Team Tido driver, navigated by Mattias Edielsson is seeded first in a list of 36 drivers who have enlisted for the nine-day event that will be preceded by a shakedown at Vipingo Ridge’s 6km spectator stage. More than 10 local drivers led by second seed Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo, Baldev Chager in a Porsche 911and Ian Duncan in a Ford Capri taking up the third and fourth seedings will be battling for podium finishes.
“The 4000km is comprised 2000km of competitive stages and the other half is transport sections. The shortest competitive stage is about 50km while the longest is 155km and this presents the drivers with a mix of rough, smooth and smooth stages which are quite challenging thus stretching the drivers and cars abilities and bring out the best in the sport,” said event general manager Pipi Renu.
South Africa’s Geoff Bell is seeded fifth and will be navigated by Kenya’s Timothy Challen. He will be followed by Ford Escort RS 1800 Argentine driver Jorge Perez Companc, Richard Jackson, navigated by Ryan Champion. – LYNETTE MATHEKA
