Women’s Africa Cup Sevens Most Valuable Player (MVP) Janet Akello was named the Sports Personality of the Month in September beating a star-studded short list for the award.
The Kenya Lionesses and KCB winger becomes the third recipient of the StarTimes sponsored monthly award after a stellar performance in the African championship held in Tunisia in September where the national team qualified for the 2018 Commonwealth Games for the first time as one of top-two ranked African nations.
In addition to her being named the MVP in Tunisia, she was the second top try scorer with 7 tries and provided a couple of assists which were instrumental in Lionesses’ qualification despite losing 17-12 to South Africa in the final. Akello beat fellow team-mate Sinaida Aura who was the top try scorer in Tunisia, Joyceline Jepkosgei who broke the world 10km record at the Birell Prague Grand Prix and marathoner Eliud Kipchoge.
“I am truly humbled as this is a dream come true. This is a good motivator as we prepare for Dubai Sevens and the Commonwealth Games,” said Akello, adding that she will give the two tournaments her all while dedicating the award to the entire Kenya Lionesses team and technical unit.
StarTimes Director of Marketing and PR Japhet Akhulia congratulated her for the win and called on all sports personalities to show dedication and effort and they will be recognised. “Congratulations to Akelo.
She has been outstanding in her exploits and deserves this special recognition. As a brand, StarTimes will endeavor to encourage our sports personalities for their efforts,” he noted.
Janet, one of fastest rugby players on the continent, was the top try scorer during the 2015/ 2016 Women’s League with 41 tries and also the first player to score a try in the World Rugby sevens for Lionesses.
