Coach names 28 local-based stars for Zambia friendly

Kakamega Homeboyz defender Charles Momanyi, Chemelil Sugar’s Shaffan Siwa and KCB’s Simon Abuko are among players who have received their maiden call ups to the national team as Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi named a 28-man provisional squad of local-based players for their international friendly against Zambia on November 14.

Gor Mahia defender Wellington Ochieng, Vihiga United’s Chris Masinza and Whyvonne Isuza of Mathare United have also been drafted in the team as Okumbi maintained most of the players who did duty against Thailand and Iraq in their tour of Asia in October.

SportPesa Premier League (SPL) champions Gor Mahia will have seven players in camp with goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch leading the K’Ogalo contingent while AFC Leopards have five. SPL Golden Boot contender Kepha Aswani made the list alongside Gor’s George Odhiambo as well as Western Stima’s Ezekiel Otuoma.

Notably missing in the striking force is Ulinzi’s top scorer Stephen Waruru. However, team-mate Samuel Onyango is included. Tusker FC have one called up in Jackson Macharia while Sofapaka have no representative.

Meanwhile, the final squad of the Kenya Under 20 women’s national team that will face Ghana in the second round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers has been named ahead of the two-leg fixture.

Coach Carol Ajowi’s charges will face Ghana on November 5 away before playing the return leg in Machakos on November 18 for a chance to feature in the third round whose winners will take the two slots to represent the continent in the ninth edition of the global showpiece.

Ajowi will be missing the services of seven players who did duty for the team in the previous two stages, when they edged out Botswana and Ethiopia to advance to this stage, as they are sitting their national exams.

They are Ibinzo Girls’ and Vihiga Queens’ goal poacher Cynthia Shilwatso, Sheryl Angachi, Maureen Khakasa, Cynthia Akinyi, Sharon Adhiambo, Mercy Airo and Vivian Nasaka. Thika Queens’ Wincate Kaari will skipper the side that leaves for Accra tomorrow for Sunday’s assignment.
