Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s rebranded National Resistance Movement could degenerate into a militia if not checked, the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) warned yesterday.
Speaking in Mombasa yesterday, CIPK organising secretary Sheikh Mohamed Khalifa urged Raila to eschew activities and utterances that could lead to bloodshed and further hurt the economy.
He said that countries currently reeling in civil wars such as Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and Iraq “were plunged into chaos by resistant movements.” “Kenya today hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees from Somalia, South Sudan and other neighbouring countries because of the peace that we enjoy.
We should, therefore, not take it for granted but instead guard it jealously because if we slip a bit, we will realise that we may not be far from the verge of collapse,” cautioned Khalifa. The leaders spoke even as religious leaders in Kisumu renewed calls for dialogue between President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and the National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader to save the country from plunging into chaos.
Under the umbrella of Nyanza Council of Church Leaders through its chairman Bishop Ogonyo Ngede, the clerics said following IEBC’s announcement of the presidential election results, there is need for the country to heal from the wounds of the prolonged political tension.
