Tonight, the media fraternity is up in arms after two journalists were attacked and manhandled by a group of opposition supporters moments before they were scheduled to cover an announcement by NASA leader Raila Odinga.
Citizen Tv senior political reporter Francis Gachuri was roughed up and beaten by marauding youths allied to the opposition outfit accusing his media house of allegedly flashing numbers on its screen that gave President Uhuru Kenyatta a win in the just concluded repeat presidential election.
NTV camera person Jane Gatwiri was also slapped and mandhandled by the angry NASA supporters who accused the media houses of alleged bias towards President Kenyatta.
The incident which was captured on live television has however elicited angry protests from the Kenya Union of Journalists and the Editors Guild who have threatened to stop assigning journalists to NASA events if their security will not be guaranteed.
NASA leaders Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi have since apologized for the embarassing incident saying it does reflect the opposition’s policy towards the media even as the government said its investigating the matter with a view of bringing the culprits to book.
