Linah Rutto is the first Kenyan to strike it rich in the first Lotto’s Marafiki Power Draw after winning Sh11 million at the weekend. The 48-year-old achieved the life-changing feat with her ticket number 60501051097 during Lotto’s 205th Draw held on Saturday.
Linah’s Power Draw fortune was accompanied by other winners of the night with Mary Nyokabi taking home the biggest share of Sh100,000 as Charles Morara came a close second with Sh75,000 prize.
Those who bagged a Sh50,000 windfall include Mary Wangui, Hilder Nduta Mutuga, Frank Mwangu, James Kinyanjui Macharia, Micheal Anjimbi, Teresiah Nyacuma and Moses Macharia as Joseph Ngugi Gathungu claimed Sh20,000. Rutto, who is accustomed to a life of squad goals, is married to a General Service Unit (GSU) officer.
She says she will use Sh10 million out of the windfall to improve her life and share the rest with four of her selected friends. She began playing Lotto on impulse having seen many winners celebrated via Lotto in live shows and was determined to emulate them.
A lifetime resident of Nakuru where she was born in 1969, Rutto has been eking out a living as a clothes vendor for the past 20 years. Alongside her husband of 20 years, the news was just too good to believe before the reality sunk in, in the presence of her three children, two girls and one boy.
Having achieved three major milestones in raising her children to adulthood, Rutto can now add Lotto’s breakthrough to her list of successes. She will consult her husband and children to get advice in regard to her next step.
