Disquiet over ‘heavy security’ in Kisumu

Panic has gripped Nyanza region after the government allegedly deployed a contingent of police officers ahead of Thursday’s fresh presidential election.

Kisumu Residents Voice Association chairman Audi Ogada claimed yesterday the heavily-armed officers arrived at the weekend terming the move illegal because residents should have freedom of movement.

He wondered why the officers were sent to the lake side county ahead of the exercise they insisted they will not take part in. Already top political leaders in the area allied to the National Super Alliance (Nasa) have been on record vowing that they will ensure the region does not participate in the exercise. However, Regional Police Commander Leonard Katana denied the claims.

“We have adequate security personnel to man the forthcoming election and I am not aware of such plans,” he said on phone. This came even as Opposition supporters are expected to resume the weekly anti-IEBC demonstrations today. Nasa chiefs insist there will be no election without electoral reforms.
