Thirty orphans in three primary schools in Kitui county have benefited from donations of uniforms, textbooks and writing materials from two institutions worth Sh60,000.
Eileen Delight Missionaries from United Kingdom donated uniforms while students from Daystar University gave textbooks and writing materials in the initiative organised by Smile African Development Organisation (SADO), a non –governmental organisation.
The donors visited the Yumbisye, Kwa Kutu and Kilinyaa primary schools with the goodies following a request by the SADO Coordinator Michael Mwanza who sought to equip the orphans with essential learning materials.
Mwanza said high poverty levels in the households have put orphans on the receiving end impacting negatively on their learning endeavours hence need for intervention by charitable organisations and donors. “Primary school education is free but there are hidden expenses such as tuition and Parents Teacher Association (PTA) fees. That really arginalises disadvantaged children,’’ he said.
Mwanza stressed the need for education stakeholders to come up with a policy of ensuring full free primary and secondary education for orphans to ease burden of the guardians who are struggling to meet their education needs along with their own children.
