Leaders Kabras set for Dala Sevens challenge

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has released this weekend’s draw for the annual Dala Sevens at the Mamboleo Showground in Kisumu. Circuit leaders and title contender Kabras Sugar have been seeded top in Pool A with newcomers the outstanding Menengai Oilers, Nondescripts and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

Resolution Impala Saracens, looking for their first circuit overall crown in a 13-year wait, are in Pool B with defending Dala Sevens champions and reign national champions Menengai Cream Homeboyz. Western Bulls and Resolution Kisii round off the pool in what is on paper a competitive group.

Top Fry Nakuru headline Pool C which also features KCB, Blak Blad and hosts Kisumu while Pool D consists of SportPesa Quins, Mwamba, Strathmore Leos and division two winners Makueni. Meanwhile, Kisumu County Government has moved in speed to assure Kenya Rugby Union and rugby fraternity as a whole that, the lakeside city is safe to host the tournament as earlier planned.

In a consultative meeting held on Tuesday at the union offices between KRU and the county represents and a subsequent undertaking by Kisumu County Boss, Governor Professor Peter Ayang Nyong’o through a letter to KRU, he assures of maximum security, before, during and after the tournament. “I have learnt of the plans by the KRU to host the finals of the Dala 7s this weekend.

The county government and the people of Kisumu warmly welcome the teams and fans to our county and the City of Kisumu” the letter read in part. “We assure you of the County Government’s commitment to maintaining a conducive environment, in terms of security and facilities necessary for the sporting event and other socio-economic activities of the visiting teams and fans”.

“We wish you a successful tournament and a fulfilling stay in the county,” concluded the letter by professor Nyong’o. The National Super Alliance (NASA) demos especially in Kisumu had threatened to have the tournament moved to either Nakuru or Nairobi but with the assurance Kisumu County Government, Dala 7s will be held in Kisumu Mamboleo Showground as planned.
