Tables have turned against a Maragua parliamentary aspirant over sodomy claims after a suspect arrested allegedly for assaulting him was allowed to give his side of the story. From the suspect’s account of the events of July 15 at a Kenol lodging in Murang’a county, police concluded that the aspirant has a case to answer.
Today, the aspirant running on an independent ticket in Maragua constituency, Sam Wairimu is set to appear in court to answer to sodomy charges. He was arrested on Monday night; a week after the incident took place.
“We arrested the aspirant after a complaint was filed against him by a suspect, who is in custody for allegedly assaulting the candidate,” said Kandara police boss Gregory Mutiso yesterday.
He said Wairimu will face sodomy charges while the other suspect is expected to be charged with physical assault. However, the aspirant gave a different account of the incident, alleging that his ordeal resulted from political wars with his rivals, who he said were scared of his rising political star.
“The aspirant told us that an unknown person broke into a hotel room where he was spending the night and viciously attacked him with a wooden bar that had nails on it,” the police boss added.
Some of his supporters are reported to share similar views that Wairimu was confronted by unknown assailants on Friday July 15, who beat him up with crude weapons leaving him seriously injured.
According to Wairimu, neighbours who responded to his screams locked the lodging door from outside, trapping him inside with his attacker as they called the police for help.
The whole drama is said to have started last week when the aspirant, 12 days to the August 8 polls, was rescued by police officers at 5.30am from a lodging in Kenol after he made a distress call. Mutiso said when police gained access to the room where Wairimu was, they found him bleeding.
He said the candidate was taken to a hospital in Kenol while the suspected culprit was taken to Kabati Police Station. “At the police station, the suspect narrated why he was fighting the candidate,” said Mutiso, adding that “ accused Wairimu of trying to sodomise him.”
