The 10th edition of the Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) annual Sports Championships commenced in earnest yesterday at Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa with 65 campuses across the country competing for different honours.
Over 2,000 trainee medics will for the next five days of the championships, fight for victory not in medical wards but in athletics, indoor sports and outdoor ball games. Nyamira, Nairobi and Meru campuses showed intent on clinching the overall title by leading the points table on the opening day of the games.
Kisii campus reigned terror on Port Reitz in ladies volleyball with a three-straight sets victory during the opening game of the championships. Inspired by skipper Dorothy Adhiambo, Kisii took the first and second sets 25-17 before winning the third set 25-18.
The second volleyball contest saw Laura Ikaki star in Webuye’s three-set victory over Thika campus. Coached by Ernest Wanyonyi, Webuye cut short Thika’s ambitions by limiting their scores to under 20 points with 25-18, 25-19 and 25-14 walloping.
Paul Keno coached Eldoret campus towered over Lake Victoria with a 3-1 beating in the men first volleyball contest of the championships where Enock Kipkoech and Dennis Kiprop were the leading lights.
