Team Kenya squad that won 15 medals for their nation at the last ever IAAF World Under 18 (WU18) Championships in Nairobi recently, returned to Nairobi yesterday after a life- time treat that saw them visit historical sites at the Coast, thanks to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s gesture.
They were in high spirits for the memorable fete after concluding their four-day holiday trip to the coastal town of Mombasa gifted to them by President Kenyatta on Friday when he hosted them at State House, Nairobi.
The team whose majority had never been to Mombasa in their lifetime, arrived in Mombasa by train on the Standard Gauge Railway line and booked into the ‘prestigious’ Pride Inn Hotel in Mombasa and taken to a tour of the city on Sunday. They were then treated to a visit at Bamburi’s Haller Park.
President Kenyatta also gave the team comprising 44 athletes and 32 coaches Sh7.6m to share among them, with each member of the team taking home Sh100,000 as a token of appreciation for their performance.
Kenya won four gold, seven silver and four bronze to finish fourth in the last ever edition of the WU18 behind South Africa, China and Cuba.
