Two prisoners at the Kodiaga maximum prison and a villager in Kisumu have died of cholera outbreak that has been reported in the prison since Sunday last week.
The three succumbed to the disease that is feared of spreading to other parts of Kisumu town. More than 30 inmates of the correctional facility were yesterday morning also admitted to hospital suffering from the communacable disease.
Nyanza Kenya Prisons Regional Commander Amos Misik csaid the inmates from both Maximum and medium prison were rushed to hospital when they complained of stomach pain and diarrhoea.
He said eight have been discharged from the hospital and those still admitted are in stable condition adding that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the disease does not spread.
Reports emerging later, however, said two had succumbed to the highly contagious disease. At the same time, Health ministry has said the number of new cholera cases reported daily has gone down from 60 to 35 recorded in the last one week.
