Laikipia North MP was yesterday arraigned before Kibera Law Courts for incitement to violence and racial contempt.
Mathew Lempurkel was, however, not charged as the prosecution counsel Mary Wang’ele sought more time to consult with Director of Public Prosecutions about the charges.
According to the charge sheet, the MP made utterances in Samburu Language which were intended to incite locals against members of European communities living in Kenya and other Kenyan communities on July 19 at Muwarak (Posta) in Rumuruti, Laikipia county.
He was arrested in Nanyuki on Saturday and later taken to Naro Moru Police Station in Nyeri county for interrogation The prosecution asked the court to detain the legislator for one more day to wait for DPP’s further instructions.
Chief magistrate Joyce Gandani however declined to detain him saying he cannot be a flight risk as he is a Member of Parliament. Magistrate Gandani released him on bond of Sh300,000 or a cash bail of Sh100,000 and deferred his plea to Friday.
