A court in Kisumu yesterday dismissed a case filed by three petitioners seeking to compel the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to announce presidential results within seven hours after polling stations are closed.
Jackline Otieno, Titus Alila and Francis Ogada had filed a petition on their own behalf and as officials of Sumawe Youth Group to ask the court to compel IEBC to announce results within seven hours to avoid anxiety from the public.
However, in his ruling High Court judge David Majanja (pictured) said that the court had no mandate to direct IEBC, which is an independent body, how it should operate. He said IEBC is mandated by the Constitution to release the results within seven days after the closure of polling stations.
