Makadara handball court has been refurbished through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) at a cost of Sh3million.
Area MP Benson Mutura says the facility—which now has floodlights— will be helpful to teams not just in Makadara but also in the country and also lashed out at some Nairobi County officials for demanding kick backs whenever such projects get underway.
“Apart from this handball project, we have a swimming pool at Rabai School under our CDF project. Our next phase will see us include changing rooms in this facility and a sports gym to enable youth get fit and also generate income from fees charged to non-members,” said Mutura.
It is the next big sporting facility to be upgraded in the area after the completion of the old Jericho Camp Toyoyo grounds in 2015 that now hosts Kenyan Premier League and National Super League teams.
The new facility hosted its first senior matches yesterday during the JBM Handball Talent Search tournament. In some selected results, Kenya Handball League leaders Strathmore beat Generations 24-13 before losing 20-15 to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB ) in Pool “A” while second-placed Black Mambas thrashed Kabarak 38-9 in Pool “B.”
In another Pool “A” match, NCPB beat Generations 26-15 while in Pool “B”, St Paul’s University beat Mount Kenya University 21-19 before hammering Kabark 25-11 as Black Mamba registered a 29-17 win over MKU.
Selected women’s matches include, Nairobi Water beat NCPB 29-23 as the junior category saw Lenana “A” beat Aquinas “B” 20-13, Sparklers Club edge out Lenana “B” 19-11, Black Mamba record a 24-6 victory over Aquinas who would later fall to Sparklers 16-12.
