Tell us about yourself
My name is Joyna Chebet, I love Jesus Christ and I’m a gospel singer at the age of six. I am the first born in a family of two. I study at Pearls Kindergarten in Rongai, currently in Pre-unit.
When did you start singing?
I started singing before I could even speak, when I was two years old, but I recorded my first song last year when I was five years old.
What motivates you to sing?
I come from a musical family. My mum, Maggy Seurey, is a gospel singer, so most of what we listen to at home is gospel music. Other than that, I see what other musicians do and get motivated.
Who trains you on singing?
I am not really trained. I think it’s a talent that God gave me, so it comes naturally. However, my mum guides me when I’m singing.
Tell us about your just released song
It’s called Nampenda. It talks of my love for Christ who died on the cross to save us from our sins.
What else do you do other than singing?
I am a backup dancer for mum during her performances. I enjoy being on stage with my mum a lot.
How do you balance singing and school?
I rarely sing at events when school is open. However, that doesn’t stop me from doing what I love most, so, on weekends, I sing at concerts arranged by my mum, or just sing at home.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are singing, dancing, modelling, playing the piano, and biking.
Do your parents support you on your talents?
Yes, especially mum. My just released song was written by her. She heard me playfully singing the chorus, and decided to take it up and develop it into a full song.
Are you planning on doing a collaboration with your mum?
Yes, I would love to, especially since she got nominated at Groove Awards in the Rift Valley artistes category. I heard her saying that she would like me to sing a verse in one of the songs in her upcoming new album.
Do you still want to continue singing when you grow up?
I want to be a star gospel artist when I grow up. I also want to motivate other children my age to serve God with their talents.
