Battered and bruised SportPesa Premier League All Stars team will be hoping to bounce back in the second match of their Spanish tour against Sevilla Atletico ‘’B’’ team on Saturday.
The match will be played at the Estadio Jose Burgois in Malaga at 10.00 pm Kenyan time.
SPL All Stars slumped to a 4-0 defeat by La Liga second division side Cordoba CF last Wednesday and will thus be striving to leave no stone unturned against another strong opposition.
Jonathan Mejjian, Sergi Guardiola, Alberto Quiles and Javi Lara scored a goal apiece for Cardoba with the performance of the hosts asking a lot of questions on the quality of Kenyan game and especially this time when the team that is touring Spain is primed to play at the 2018 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in Kenya.
A section of football fans in Kenya have sensationally remarked that poor fielding in the SPL All Stars by head coach Stanely Okumbi was the bane of the team’s heavy defeat, the composition of some of the best locally-based players in the squad notwithstanding.
For SPL All Stars, they have no choice but re-strategise but above all, Okumbi must instill a winning mentality on the players and calm their nerves if the team is to avoid another slump. Sevilla Atletico will be playing at their fortress before their faithful and, just like Cardoba, they thrive on set-pieces which calls for SPL All Stars to be on full alert.
Sevilla have quality players like Cruz Bernado, Christain Gonzalez, Aburjania Giorgi and Coton Antonio who can wreck havoc to any defence on a good day.
Saturday’s match presents Okumbi with a chance of trying out players who did not feature against Cardoba ostensibly to gauge their capabilities ahead of the CHAN assignment.
First choice goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch might give way for Sofapaka glove-man Mathews Kigonya.
while youthful Maurice Ojwang’ from SPL side Western Stima could play his first international game in the defence.
Since the match is aimed at exposing all the players to get the best for CHAN, two fresh legs in Benson Iregi of Thika United and Nakumatt’s Clinton Kisiavuli could be thrown in the midfield but the striking line of Vincent Oburu (AFC Leopards), Samuel Onyango and Jackson Macharia (Tusker) is likely to remain intact.
