The European Union (EU) will spend Sh4.8b (€4m) to assist the government combat effects of climate change through rehabilitation and restoration of Mt Elgon and Cherangany water towers. T
he Deputy Director Climate Change Adaptation,Climate Change Directorate Thomas Lerenten said that the project which was started a year ago is expected to take four years leading to restoration and rehabilitation of degraded sites within the water towers serving more than 11 counties.
“The programme targets landscape approach in the conservation and restoration of degraded areas in two water towers which have been encroached by humans,” he said during a workshop for Trans Nzoia and West Pokot counties at a Kitale hotel.
Counties which share the two water towers are West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Bungoma,Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, Siaya and Kisumu.
