The High Court has terminated corruption charges against Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina. Wainaina (pictured), an aide to Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, was charged last year with bribing Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko with the aim of silencing him from blowing the whistle on corruption at City Hall.
The charge sheet read that on January 5, at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), he offered Sh1 million to Sonko as inducement not to pursue a matter where the politician had invited the media to accompany him in documenting how senior officers were constructing private and development houses using public funds.
However, yesterday Justice John Mativo terminated the criminal case before the anti-corruption court saying it was abuse of criminal justice process.
He said Wainaina had shown that Sonko was more of a complainant and that in the absence of the commissioners, EACC was not objective enough and could not recommend to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) his prosecution.
