A spirited performance by Thika United has been described as the major contributory factor to their priceless barren draw with pre-match favourites Sofapaka in the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match last weekend.
Sofapaka deputy captain Maurice Odipo, who was not fielded on the day, conceded that Thika United made their life very difficult on the pitch and that the final outcome was least surprising.
“I was watching the proceeding from the sidelines and was shocked by the audacity displayed by our opponents. Everyone expected us to win the match but it is always tricky playing against a team which is placed at the lower reaches of the league which is vouching to haul themselves up,” said Odipo.
Sofapaka started the SPL second leg with a bang, beating big teams like Gor Mahia in their wake but the team has suddenly put their feet off the gas pedal. But Odipo has declared that they are determined to bounce back beginning with the GOtv Shield Cup round of sixteen match against Kariobangi Sharks this weekend.
“Every team has had its own rough patch and we are no exception. We have a great squad and I believe there is still room for improvement going forward, “said Odipo while giving plaudits to Thika United for a great show.
Like Odipo, Sofapaka Technical Director Martin Ndagano remarked that the match against Thika United offered Batoto Ba Mungu offered them their ultimate test ever in the second stanza of the season.
“It was as if Thika United had nothing to lose and they came hard on us. This was a learning experience for us and we hope to get a formula to return to winning ways and restore the confidence of our fans,” said Ndagano.
