Football fans in the country will be treated to a football bonanza of the 2017 International Champions Cup (ICC) which began yesterday and will be running for two weeks to be televised live courtesy of pay TV Company StarTimes.
The prestigious and annual club soccer tournament will be played in China, United States of America (USA) and Singapore. Teams from Europe playing their pre-season matches will compete with top teams from other parts of the globe during the tourney.
Top teams that will compete in the tournament ahead of the 2017/18 season kick-off include English Premier League (EPL) sides Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United while in the Bundesliga League Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also on the programme.
La Liga will have champions Real Madrid and arch- rivals FC Barcelona. The highlight of the ICC however, will be in the USA where two high –profile matches are expected to be held; perennial rivals Manchester City and Manchester United will be crossing swords before Champions League winners Madrid managed by Zinedine Zidane will take on rivals Barcelona in the only second staging of the El Clasico outside Spain after UEFA Super Cup in Paris in 2017.
Bayern and Borussia who have won the Bundesliga title eight times since 2010 face AC Milan and Arsenal in the Chinese leg of the ICC. The Bavarians will then proceed to Singapore for a pre-season match against AC Milan, play against Rossoneri’s city rivals Inter-Milan, for whom the participation in the ICC is the closest they will come to international football this season after missing out on a place in Europe following a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Serie A.
StarTimes vice president Mark Lisboa said “All ICC matches will be broadcast live and exclusively on StarTimes five-sport channels as we are the tournament’s exclusive broadcaster for sub-Saharan Africa.”
